In 1992, Kate Tufts established the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award in honor of her husband, a poet and writer. While some poetry prizes discover and honor new voices and others crown an indisputably major body of work, this award aims to sustain a poet who is laboring in the difficult middle between these extremes.

In 1993, the Kate Tufts Discovery Award was established to honor a first book by a poet of genuine promise.

Eligible books must be authored by a U.S. citizen or legal resident. Previous winners of the Kingsley Tufts Award are not eligible. A panel of three preliminary judges selects 50 finalists for the Kingsley and 25 finalists for the Kate. A final panel of five judges selects a winner for each award.

In 2007, the winner of the Kingsley Tufts will receive $100,000, and the winner of the Kate Tufts will receive $10,000.
