Try the new Honor Roll Query Generator!

Award Annals is where creative works judged the best of their kind are documented and ranked. This site ranks over 9,000 creative works that have received some of over 160 book awards, film awards, and music awards. Best of all, the wiki format will allow you to add your favorite literary prize to the site and ensure it is well-documented.

This site began in 2004 as a cross-reference of books that had been nominated for science fiction literary prizes. Once the mechanism was in place, honors in other genres were added. When over 5,000 books had been ranked, film and music honors were added and the wiki enabled. Though these other creative works are important, Award Annals is still mainly about literary prizes simply because so many books are printed and judged by so many organizations. The current list of awards is more than enough to keep one administrator busy.

Here is how an Honor Roll is made: whenever a book, film, or album is nominated for an honor, the event is recorded in the annals simply by creating two types of wiki page: one contains a description of the book, and the other documents the award event by specifying a shortlist and a winner. When the event is saved, the nominated works are given a score for receiving the honor. A book that has garnered several literary honors will have a higher score, and appears nearer the top of our honor rolls. The top ten books on any literary honor roll have been judged by several different groups as an exceptional work of literature.

Here are just a few of the Honor Rolls available. You simply must read every book on the first page of your favorite genre! Compare the honors which your favorites have received to discover which literary prize judges share your tastes, then check out the other books that they have chosen to honor.

Searching for a book or video

If you are looking for a specific work, the search box is your best bet. Some people just want to see which awards a particular book has received, but most browsers are simply searching for a good read that won’t waste their time and money. The gestalt of human judgment represented in these annals is a great place to find worthy works.

If you already have one of our awards in mind, you are well on your way. Each award category has annals which document the results year-by-year, and an honor roll ranking all the works mentioned in those annals. For instance, the Hugo Awards category “Novel” has award annals dating back to 1946 and an honor roll listing the most-honored novels ever nominated for a Hugo.

Most people do not have a favorite literary prize, and would not know which of these awards has tastes similar to their own. Fortunately, the site may be browsed like a bookstore. You’ll find your favorite aisle in the “books by genre” category. There are quite a few ways of browsing the creative works on this site, though you will probably find the honor rolls the most interesting.

Help wanted: inquire within

Award Annals has a number of projects that need your help. One easy and enjoyable way to help is simply to browse the site looking for problems. Spelling, punctuation, grammar, and formatting all need improvement because much of this wiki was converted from the original Book Award Annals database, and has yet to be reviewed with human eyes. Please review Policies and guidelines and How to document an award, then register, log in, and help.

Specific projects (documentation coming soon):

  • Adopt an award: We currently track only a small fraction of the number of prizes being given every year. Choose one from the list and make it your mission to document it. Or add one to the list if you think it worthy of inclusion.
  • Award histories: documenting award events, adding pages for the honored works
  • IMDB keys: provide direct links to the Internet Movie Database
  • People pages: information about authors, directors, and artists
